The complicated process of proving identity theft

Every year thousands of people have their information stolen, sometimes through no fault of their own.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Identity theft is at an all time high, and people are becoming victims right here in western Massachusetts.

Major U.S. companies have reported data breaches that have exposed the personal information of millions of Americans.  If identity thieves can break through the security of multi-national corporations and governments, think about how easy it would be for hackers to gain access to your identity from smaller companies like local banks, utilities, and doctor's offices.

The 22News I-Team spoke to an identity theft victim about the complicated process he went through after his identity was stolen, and the obstacles he faced while trying to prove his innocence.
