CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - A teacher at the Mohawk Trail Regional High School has been placed on leave after allegations of inappropriate conduct with a student.
Superintendent of Schools Michael Buoniconti sent a notice to the Mohawk School community with information about the investigation. The notice did not name the teacher or student involved.
Mary Carey of the Northwestern District Attorney's office responded to our inquiry about the investigation, saying "We can neither confirm nor deny the existence of ongoing investigations."
Here is the Superintendent's letter in its entirety:
Dear Mohawk School Community:
Late in the evening on Monday, March 7th, Mohawk administration received an email from a Mohawk family about a very serious concern involving a Mohawk High School teacher.
The following morning, Mohawk administration met with this family and immediately launched an internal investigation. At approximately 12:30 pm on Tuesday, March 8th, Mohawk administration placed the teacher on leave pending its investigation.
Mohawk administration contacted the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and the local law enforcement who in turn contacted the District Attorney's office. The District Attorney's office began conducting its own investigation into the allegations.
I fully recognize how frustrating it may feel to you, but please understand that my ability to communicate publicly about personnel matters is extremely limited due to legal rights associated with due process. In this instance, I am deliberately leaning forward as much as I can legally given the needs of our school community.
Please know that Mohawk administration is providing counseling services to impacted students, families, and staff. We wish to do everything we can to support our school community during this extraordinarily trying time.
Please be assured that the safety of our students is always our highest priority. Always.
Michael A. Buoniconti
Superintendent of Schools
Mohawk Trail Regional School District
Hawlemont Regional School District
