Suspect shot in arm in confrontation with Springfield police

Police say driver put car in reverse, threatening officers

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A suspect is recovering in the hospital, after Springfield police say that person was shot by an officer who feared for their safety.

Springfield Police spokesman Ryan Walsh told 22News  that the suspect refused to pull over for police 10:30 Tuesday night. He said the driver tried to evade police, leading them on a short, low-speed chase, before slamming into a parked car, a fence, and a porch on Pendleton Avenue.

Walsh says the suspect then put the car in reverse, which he said put the safety of officers in jeopardy. It was then that  an officer fired at the suspect, who was struck in the arm.

The driver was arrested, and taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he’s expected to recover.

The Hampden County District Attorney’s office is now reviewing the incident. The identities of the suspect, and the officer involved in the shooting, have not been released at this time.
