Snowstorm causing flight cancellations, delays at Bradley International Airport

Many flights being cancelled due to snow

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WWLP) –  If you plan on flying out of Bradley International Airport Thursday morning, you may want to check your flight before you head out.

The last flight flew out of Bradley at 8:15 a.m. Thursday to Minneapolis. It was one of only two flights that left the airport once the snow started.

“So direct flight to Orlando, be at Disney World noon and hit the parks and now we’re going to Minnesota,” said Brittany Tuttle of Deerfield.

“Our flight got cancelled because of the snow,” said Kaelyn Tuttle of Deerfield.

Snow beginning to fall across western Massachusetts

It’s a story shared by nearly every passenger who was supposed to fly out of Bradley international airport Thursday.

Some stranded in Connecticut because of the storm. One family turned to other options when their flight into Bradley was cancelled in Washington D.C.

“As we were waiting to check in they cancelled our flight,” said David Evans of Groton. “So we just got as far north as we could and just started driving.”

Flight cancellations started coming in Wednesday night ahead of the storm. Alisa Sisic, spokesperson for Bradley International Airport, told 22News that we’ll likely see more cancellations and delays as the storm continues to move in.

And while the snow cancelled many people’s plans, there were a lucky few who were able to catch those last on-time flights.

One Connecticut basketball team tried their luck to catch a plane to Atlanta.

The Yale bulldogs pulled up to Bradley just before 6:30 a.m. Thursday hoping to catch their flight. Luckily for them, their flight was just one of two to take off from Bradley after the snow started.

After a slow drive up from New Haven, the Bulldogs felt lucky they made their flight on time.

“The board only has two flights that aren’t cancelled, so we got a little lucky today,” Yale University basketball player, Trey Phills told 22News.

The team is hoping that luck will transfer to the court Saturday when they face Georgia Tech.

For some, it’s their first stroke of luck as they make their way down the snow-covered East Coast.

For some, it’s their first stroke of luck as they make their way down the snow-covered East Coast.

“Now we think it’s still on so hopefully we’re not stranded in Atlanta,” Stephen and Matt Diefenderfer told 22News.

But for the Evans family, it’s back in the car. “And drive the remaining two hours back home,” Evans told 22News.
