Three people lived at the home

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A man is dead after he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries following a house fire in Springfield Tuesday afternoon.

Springfield Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News they were called to a fire at 88 Melrose Street at 1:25 p.m. A 69-year-old man was found in the basement of the one-story home, where Leger said the fire is believed to have started.

Emergency crews performed CPR on the man before taking him to Baystate Medical Center. Leger said he was in critical condition at the time.

A firefighter was also hurt in the fire. He suffered eye injuries and has been treated and released from the hospital.

He is expected to be okay.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office were called in to help the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad investigate the cause of the fire due to the severity of the man’s injuries.

Leger said three people lived in the home and are forced to find somewhere else to stay.
