NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The Forbes Library in Northampton is making sure everyone has access to books, even if they can’t get to the library.
The Forbes Library delivers library materials to residents who are physically unable to make it to the library.
The Forbes Library has been offering this book delivery service for more than 50 years but the program was in jeopardy of being cut because of budget constraints.
The program was saved thanks to the friends of Forbes Library and individual donors.
Lisa Downing, Director of Forbes Library in Northampton told 22News, “They want to keep reading and the reading is so good for them. Mentally it keeps them mentally stimulated and it’s also having that relationship with library and the particular volunteer that comes out, giving them companionship.”
Patrons are matched with volunteers with similar interests. All volunteers are trained and undergo a background check. They donate about 2 hours a week and visit each library member at their house.
Lilly Library in Florence is also a contributing partner.
The Forbes Library currently has 28 volunteers and serves nearly 80 people in Northampton, Florence and Leeds.
