DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police say a Des Moines mother has been arrested after officers found her three young children alone outside their home, including one covered in feces and another with a full diaper.

TV station KCCI reports that a 4-year-old boy was left in charge Monday of his 2-year-old and 1-year-old siblings. He’d taken them outside after their stove made a frightening sound when he tried to make breakfast.

County records say Destinee Miller remains jailed Tuesday on child endangerment charges. The records don’t list the name of an attorney who can comment for her.

Officers say the house was littered with hundreds of mounds of dog feces. Miller later told officers she had left to take one of her dogs to a vet.

State authorities have taken custody of the children.

DES MOINES (NEXSTAR) – Police responded to the house at 106 Fulton Drive in Des Moines.

Neighbors called police because a four-year-old, two-year-old and one-year-old were outside with no supervision. They say the four-year-old turned the oven on to fix food for his young siblings but got scared when the oven made a weird noise. That’s why the children were outside. One of them was only wearing a diaper, one was naked and covered in feces. Police say the inside of the home was disgusting, and the mom was nowhere to be found.

Sgt. Paul Parizek of Des Moines P.D. said, “The conditions in the home were unspeakably horrible. There were hundreds of mounds of dog feces, human waste scattered around, spoiled food, filthy. You really can’t imagine.”

The mother, Destinee Miller finally returned home. She told police that she had to take a sick dog to the vet. She’s in jail on three counts of child endangerment.
