Search at Watershops Pond for missing teenager

Springfield police continued to search Sunday afternoon

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Sunday, Springfield Police, firefighters and State Police searched the Upper Hill neighborhood’s Watershops Pond for a teenager that’s been missing since Saturday night.

According to Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney, the 17-year-old was reported missing Sunday morning, but he hasn’t been seen since jumping off a bridge and into the water Saturday night. Officials have been searching the pond since noon Sunday, trying to locate that missing teenager.

Delaney told 22News that the missing teen’s sister contacted police Sunday morning around 8:20 to report her brother missing. The missing teen’s friends told police their friend jumped into the Watershops Pond late Saturday night, and hasn’t been seen since.

22News was there when the Springfield Fire Department put their rescue boat in the water; causing a slight traffic backup on Alden Street.

Rescuers continue to search the murky waters for that missing teen.

Ibrahim Ali, a neighbor that has lived across from the pond for more than two decades, told 22News, “Definitely alarming. I have little kids, obviously, so we’re very cautious about the water. I feel really sorry for their family. I hope everything works out.”

According to Delaney, law enforcement officials currently believe the teenager may have drowned.
