Northampton stormwater fee won’t be repealed

City solicitor says petitions to repeal ordinances are unlawful

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Northampton residents who were trying to repeal the city’s stormwater fee have been told “no.”

The Northampton Taxpayers Association submitted a petition with 500 signatures to stop the city from taxing homeowners for how much runoff water their property creates.

City Solicitor Alan Seewald says that petitions to repeal an ordinance are unlawful.

Northampton collects an average $2 million per year in stormwater fees. The money is given to the DPW to maintain storm drains, catch basins, and sewage lines.
