WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A community has gathered to make a Westfield boy’s wish come true.
Five-year-old Darren McQuade will soon have his dream play shed right in his own backyard.
Local firefighters and vendors have partnered with Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island to build and paint the shed.
“Mommy thought we can get a better place to play here,” Darren said. “So, mommy came up with the idea like this. We’re going to put some craft stuff inside, that’s what I love about this playhouse.”
The shed will be a dinosaur-themed playhouse when the work is completed. Volunteering their time is a source of satisfaction for Westfield Fire Department volunteers.
“Oh it does, it does, you know being a firefighter is more than just going to fires and emergencies,” Joseph Coach said. “It’s being part of the community, and when someone asks for help, that’s what we do and who we are. This is one of those wishes that just gave us the opportunity to reach out to the community and actually help make this wish come true.”
McQuade has been diagnosed with Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy. Due to his condition, he will soon be needing a wheel chair.
Darren’s dad looks towards the future.
“The diagnoses was pretty upsetting,” Steven McQuade said. “This has been something really positive and uplifting for him, giving him a place where he can go and have to himself.”
Darren’s dinosaur-themed playhouse will soon be ready for him to play in. The project expected to be completed on May 21.
