SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Letter carriers making their rounds will pick up thousands of pounds of donated food from western Massachusetts households Saturday morning.
The food drive has been getting an advance assist from unionized food store employees, who all week have been reminding customers of the need to donate.
“We’ve been having our members wear these (stickers) to encourage shoppers to make donations, leave donations at their door for the letter carriers tomorrow,” said Patrick Burke, an organizer with Local 1459 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.
Once the food is collected door-to-door Saturday morning, it is distributed to various food pantries for needy clients later in the day.
