Westfield State University gifted $1.1 million by anonymous donor

Will go toward purchasing pianos

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Westfield State University has received its largest donation in school history.

According to a release sent to 22News, $1.1 million was donated to the university by an anonymous donor. The large gift will go toward 20 new Steinway & Sons pianos, helping the university achieve an All-Steinway School distinction by this fall.

The donation was made in honor of Dr. Catherine Dower, who the university says served as a long-time chair of the schools music department and passed away in February.

“The purchase of exclusively Steinway & Sons pianos allows Westfield State to soon join the ranks of some of the most prestigious schools in the world and enjoy the coveted All-Steinway School distinction,” said Dr. Andrew Bonacci, current chair of Westfield State’s Music Department.

The donation surpasses the November 2015 $1 million gift from Dower herself.
