Trump: “I know I’m not under investigation”

President Donald Trump says former FBI Director James Comey told him three times that he wasn't under investigation; says he'd decided to fire Comey prior to recommendation from Department of Justice.

(NBC News) President Trump says he was not personally under investigation by the FBI and that had no bearing on his firing of Director James Comey.

The president made his comments in an exclusive interview with NBC’s Lester Holt.

“I said, if it’s possible, would you let me know am I under investigation? He said you are not under investigation,” President Trump said of one of his conversations with former FBI Director Comey.

The president also made clear he was the one who decided to fire Comey.

“I was going to fire regardless of the recommendation,” Mr. Trump said.

That contradicts earlier statements on the timing of Comey’s firing offered by the White House.

The FBI director had reportedly asked for more resources to investigate possible Trump campaign ties to Russia before his dismissal.

Lawmakers are calling for a special prosecutor with no ties to any agency to investigate.
