Nor’easter to bring rain, sometimes heavy, for Mother’s Day weekend

Sometimes Nor'easters mean snow, but not this time

(WWLP) – The 22News Storm Team continues to track a Nor’easter heading for Western Massachusetts this weekend.

A Nor’easter is a coastal storm that typically occurs between the months of September through April, so a May Nor’easter is outside our usual Nor’easter season.

7 Day Forecast

Although Nor’easters normally happen in the northeastern United States, the location is not where the storm’s name came from. They’re called Nor’easters because winds along coastal areas come from the northeast direction.

Sometimes, these storms mean snow, but not this time! We’re just expecting rain here in western Massachusetts.

Here’s the expected timeline for the weekend:

  • Cloudy
  • Chance for patchy drizzle
  • Isolated rain shower possible by late morning
  • Worth having the rain jacket just in case you get an early shower

  • Cloudy
  • Widespread rain developing
  • Rain falls at light to moderate rate
  • Temperatures only in the 50s

  • Cloudy
  • Rain, heavy at times
  • Possibility for minor street flooding

  • Cloudy
  • Heavy rain tapers to moderate and then light rain during the morning
  • Light rain tapers to on and off showers during the afternoon and evening
  • Sunday will be breezy
  • Temperatures only in the 50s
