Ticks known to carry deadly disease in New England

It's important to check yourself and your pets for ticks

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Lyme Disease might not be the most dangerous virus spread by ticks.

Some ticks carry the Powassan virus, which affects the brain and could lead to death. A Maine woman died in December, after being bitten by a tick in November.

Dr. Ira Helfand of the Family Care Medical Center in Springfield told 22News deer-ticks carry this disease, and you should take the same precautions; limiting your skin’s exposure when outdoors.

“It is suggested that you wear long pants that are tight fitting, if necessary that are fixed at the ankle. That you examine yourself when you come in from being outside and you remove any tics that you may see,” said Dr. Helfand.

It’s important to check yourself and your pets for ticks and if you find one you should remove it with tweezers.
