Major upgrades proposed for Damon Road in Northampton

New bike lanes, sidewalks among the proposed improvements

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is proposing to upgrade a main road in Northampton, and that would impact a major intersection.

The project would give a facelift to Damon Road, between the Norwottuck Rail Trail and King Street. MassDOT wants to widen the street, by adding five foot-wide bike lanes on either side of Damon Road. The road will also be repaved, and new sidewalks will be added. The existing drainage systems would be repaired.

The intersection of King Street and Damon Road would also get an upgrade, with new traffic signals and wheelchair ramps. It is one of the busiest intersections in the city leading to I-91.

Ashley Ginzburg of Northampton told 22News that the construction will be a hassle, but one worth going through.

“Even if it’s a few months or a few weeks, over time, people being more safe trying to go about their daily lives is just so much more important,” Ginzburg said.

A potential start date for the project has not yet been set. MassDOT wants to hear your suggestions of other ways that Damon Road can be improved.
