SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – The former Big Y store on Newton Street in South Hadley will be torn down. The store, which was originally a Foodmart location, has been closed for years now.

Rocco Falcone of South Hadley Plaza, LLC, which owns the property, said after numerous solicitations from other supermarket chains, they decided that they have to tear the building down.

Falcone, who is also president of Rocky’s Ace Hardware (which has a location at the same plaza), said that they are still exploring all options for the former supermarket property.

Former customers are sorry to see it go.

“Well, of course we have the memories of having a grocery story closer to many of the people who live in town, but I think that people I’ve spoken with are very much interested in what’s going to come next,” Priscilla Mandrachia of South Hadley said.

Big Y continues to operate a location in South Hadley, on Willimansett Street (Route 33) near the Chicopee line.
