Gas leak led to evacuations in Chicopee

Construction crew hit end cap near Harvard and Charles Streets

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Some homes in the Chicopee Falls neighborhood were evacuated Wednesday afternoon, due to a gas leak.

Chicopee Police Officer Mike Wilk told 22News that a construction crew struck an end cap to a gas line near the intersection of Harvard and Charles Streets.

The intersection was closed, and officers evacuated nearby homes, Wilk said.

Columbia Gas crews are making repairs to the line. The gas has been shut off.

Wilk said that everything has been made safe and the residents have been allowed to return, but drivers are being advised to avoid the area while final repairs are made.
