SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – More than 100 members of the western Massachusetts brotherhood in blue attended the funeral of a veteran Springfield police officer on Wednesday.
They came to Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Springfield to mourn the loss of 48 year old William “Billy” Kelly, who died Saturday of natural causes at Baystate Medical Center.
Sgt. John Delaney expressed the feelings of losing a fellow officer. He said, “When you wear the blue uniform every day, and you protect citizens, you become part of a brotherhood. That brotherhood means we’re all family. Billy Kelly was a great guy, a great police officer, can’t say enough about him.”
Following the Liturgy of Christian burial, the 20 year veteran officer and father of three, was laid to rest at Springfield’s Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
