Women volunteers building Springfield Habitat home

National Women Build Week is in its 10th year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Women across the country are building homes this week, and one of those houses is under construction right here in Springfield.

This is Habitat for Humanity’s 10th annual National Women Build Week.

22News went to Bristol Street in Springfield’s Upper Hill neighborhood Tuesday, where dozens of volunteers, mainly women, are putting the walls up on a two-story, single family home.

The lot was vacant, and recently sold to the city in an auction.

Springfield Habitat for Humanity is building the home, alongside the future homeowners. The volunteers working Tuesday were from Honda Financial Services in Holyoke, and another Honda department in East Windsor, Connecticut.

“I think it shows women’s powers, strength; it shows that women can actually do this on their own, and it shows the community getting involved as well,” volunteer Samara Serrano said.

These women are a few of more than 17,000 in 300 communities building affordable homes this week.

It is all made possible through Lowe’s, which donated nearly $2 million in supplies and training.
