SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Connecticut is one step closer to getting a third casino.

The Appropriations Committee voted 33 to 13 to approve a bill Monday to authorize the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes to operate a joint casino off tribal lands. The bill breaks down how the casino would be regulated, and how much of the casino’s revenue would be given to the state.

The Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes currently run Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

The two tribes want to team up to build a $300 million casino in East Windsor, Connecticut, which is about 20 minutes away from downtown Springfield.

The casino would be built at the former Showcase Cinemas Property in East Windsor. According to Tribal leaders, it would bring more than 1,700 jobs and $8.5 million dollars in revenue to the town each year.

If the casino proposal is approved, it could also have an impact on MGM Springfield. Right now, the closest casino to MGM Springfield is more than 60 miles away, but a casino in East Windsor would create competition less than 20 miles away.

The Tribes’ goal is to keep jobs and revenue in the state by directly competing against MGM Springfield for customers.

The proposal has passed committee, but it still has to clear the House and Senate before it reaches the Governor’s desk.
