SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A new section of Interstate 91 will be opening as soon as next week. It is the section of I-91 southbound just south of Exit 8. That is where the southbound travel lanes merge from two down to one.
According to MassDOT, traffic in the single lane will be shifted from the outside lane to a newly-constructed inside lane. This will allow crews to complete demolition of the outer lanes.
There will still only be a single lane of I-91 southbound open to traffic before traffic from I-291 westbound merges to form an additional lane.
The traffic shift is expected to happen next Thursday, May 18.
On the northbound side, Exit 9 is expected to re-open by the end of June. Exit 9 allows traffic to turn from I-91 northbound to Route 20 heading toward the North End Bridge, or toward Main Street.
