Residents concerned about back-ups on Mass Pike in Westfield

Some residents told 22News they changed their routes to avoid the traffic

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Drivers are complaining about back-ups on the Mass Pike during busy driving hours.

Westfield residents told 22News the Mass Pike can back up for several miles on the westbound side approaching the off-ramp at Exit 3 during rush hour.

Some commuters say they just avoid the area from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., while others say they’ve started changing their routes completely to get around it.

“I’ve seen it backed up for more than a mile, on several occasions I’ve been stuck in it a few times and it’s not worth it,” Jim McEvady said. “It’s almost worth your while to drive to Lee to get off and come back on the other side.”

Due to construction, traffic backs up because the off-ramp narrows down to one lane getting off the exit, leading to a traffic light at Routes 10 and 202.

The Mass Pike toll booths were taken down last year, and now they’re in the process of completing the renovations at all the Mass Pike interchanges.
