Victim of deadly Springfield shooting identified

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) –  The Springfield Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating the city’s third homicide this year, after a man was shot and killed in Springfield Sunday night.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, the victim has been identified as 26-year-old Shawn Ragland.

Delaney said officers were called to the area of 20 Carver Street around 9:30 p.m. Sunday for shots fired. Delaney said Ragland was found outside with gunshot wounds and was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Forest Park residents said news spread quickly through the neighborhood after the deadly shooting took place.

“I got a call from somebody and they told me somebody got shot,” Springfield resident Melissa Tavarez said. “It scared me, it made my heart drop, because it could have been anybody that I know.”

No arrests have been made at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Crime Unit at 413-787-6355.

Both Springfield Police Commissioner John Barbieri and Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni have offered their condolences to the victim’s family. Their statements are below:

“I offer the condolences of the entire department to the family and friends of Shawn Ragland,” Barbieri said. “The Major Crime Unit under the direction of Captain Trent Duda will work in a professional manner as always to investigate this murder and bring those responsible to justice.”

“I would like to express my sympathies to Mr. Ragland’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Gulluni said. “My office’s Murder Unit will work in partnership with the Springfield Police Department in the pursuit of justice for the victim and his family.”
