AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – It is Drinking Water Week; a time to raise awareness of the vital role that water plays in our lives.

The American Water Works Association is dedicated to managing and treating water. They came up with key messages for each day this week for homeowners and communities to focus on.

Some key messages are getting the lead out of drinking water, checking and fixing leaks, and caring for pipes. Local resident Jonathan Chen told 22News that he values the importance of public water.

“It’s pretty important, humans need a lot of drinking water, and I try to hit a half a gallon to a gallon each day, so having a good source of drinking water is important,” Chen said.

There are easy steps you can take every day to help the environment. Preventing clogged pipes is one of them. Try to throw fats, oils, and grease in the trash, and not in the drain.
