“Free Fire”

A Look at the Movies

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Whatever happened to anger management training for the rival thugs consummating their weapons deal in “Free Fire”?

This lively action thriller only pretends it’s nothing more than a vicious bloodbath laced with moments of black comedy. It’s a cautionary tale of what can happen when sociopaths have a falling out over the most trivial slight.

With an international cast including South Africa’s Sharlto Copley and 2015’s best actress Oscar winner Brie Larson, you know “Free Fire’s” got substantial acting credentials. Larson holds her own as the only woman and the most cynical character in the cast.

I like to think executive producer Martin Scorsese helped orchestrate their monumental misadventure of a gun deal gone sour in an abandoned warehouse.

“Free Fire” devotes most of its 1 hour and 25 minute running time to a ferocious gun battle that disproves, once and for all, any notion of honor among thieves. Especially among psychopaths.

Those in the audience unwilling or unable to grapple with the sociological issues at play here, can merely sit back and enjoy a good, old fashioned battle royal wiping out most of the players. The cast meshes so perfectly together, the squeamish in the audience might overlook some of the well intentioned hospitality.

“Free Fire” took a calculated risk being so violent, but eventually pays off with 3 stars.

You’ll come for the action and stay for the message….
