CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The City of Chicopee held an Arbor Day celebration Friday, to mark the city’s 24th consecutive year as a “Tree City USA.”
Mayor Richard Kos held the event at Fairview Park, where they recently planted three new elm trees.
By the end of the year, the city will have planted 200 new trees in total, more than 100 of which have already been planted along Fairview Avenue.
“As you build a city, there are lots of components: public safety, education- but clearly having tree cover, that level of green in your community, is also an important component to making homes that much more enjoyable,” Kos said.
The trees are part of the “Greening Gateway Cities” program, and are planted following the completion of road, sidewalk, and sewer work.
