Forum on nuclear waste storage & disposal to be held in Greenfield

The forum starts Saturday at 1 p.m. and goes until 3 p.m.

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Citizens Awareness Network is hosting an event to educate and mobilize people on the proper disposal of nuclear waste. The forum will take place on Saturday at the First Congregational Church on Silver Street in Greenfield.

The event includes a variety of guest speakers that will discuss the storage of nuclear waste and federal policy. It will also address the decommissioning of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Plant. The plant’s owner, Entergy, closed the plant a couple years ago, after more than 40 years in operation.

“I always felt uncomfortable having the plant so close and being in the zone where if something happened me my kids would be affected,” Erin Klett of Greenfield said. “I’m worried about waste disposal and how they’re taking care of it now.”

Suzanne Carlson of Citizens Awarnes Network told 22News nuclear waste disposal is a local, national and global issue. She said there is no safe technology to store or dispose of nuclear waste in the U.S.

The forum starts at 1:00 p.m. and goes until 3:00 p.m.
