Springfield man allegedly beat & stabbed an elderly man

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Police arrested a man from Springfield after he allegedly beat and stabbed an elderly man during a fight on Riverdale Street in West Springfield.

According to the West Springfield Police Facebook page, on April 28th, patrol officers and detectives were sent to a parking lot at 2044 Riverdale Street, after the department received a report of a fight involving a man with a bat and a man with a knife.

When the officers arrived at the parking lot, they found a 71-year-old man suffering from a stab wound to his left arm pit area, and multiple cuts to his face and knees, police said.

Police said the detectives determined that Bryan Zwiebel, of 769 Worthington Street in Springfield, “Kicked the elderly man’s vehicle, damaging it, which lead to the elderly man to arm himself with a baseball bat, confront Zwiebel and attempt to strike him.”

The elderly man was taken to Baystate Medical Center for treatment by a West Springfield Fire Department ambulance. The name of the man was not released.

Zwiebel was charged with the following:

  • Assault and Battery by Mean of a Dangerous Weapon (Knife)
  • Assault and Battery on a Person 60+ years with Injury
  • Malicious Damage to a Motor Vehicle
