CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The City of Chicopee will be inspecting more than 400 multi-family homes. State building code require these inspections at least once every five years.
The City’s Building Department started the inspections in May, focusing first on structures with more than eight units to assess the building’s safety.
Inspectors are checking things the buildings exit signage, the number of smoke detectors, and the condition of stairways and handrails.
Robert Barnes of Chicopee said, “I know there’s a lot of outside decks, railings or stairs that are substandard you know.”
The City hopes to complete the inspections by the end of fiscal 2018.
