Arson investigating the cause of a fire at Forest Park

Fire is in wooded area off Trafton Road

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield firefighters controlled a brush fire late Wednesday afternoon that started in the woods at Forest Park.

Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News the department received a report of a fire at Forest Park around 2:50 p.m., in a wooded area off Trafton Road.

Three fire engines and a rescue squad were sent to control the fire, which was put out by 4:00 p.m. The windy day did add to the difficulty of fighting the fire.

People were shocked to see the wooded area burning while they were walking through Forest Park. Martin Gruenberg of Springfield said, “I just walked into the park, I was walking my dog, and all of the sudden there’s a fire. I come here all the time.”

Leger said the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad was also called in to investigate the cause after a witness reported seeing three kids running away from the area where the fire started.
