SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Four years ago, 22News brought you live Breaking News when Mayor Domenic Sarno announced MGM Springfield was chosen to build a casino in the city’s Couth End. Just days later, on May 1st, the City signed the host community agreement.
Tuesday night, we spoke with residents to see if they’re happy with the progress four years later. Those things aren’t built overnight. It does take a while to tear buildings down and put others up, but from what I see, it’s coming along very well,” said Bob Howarth of Springfield.
Two weeks ago, construction shifted from exterior work to the interior. You might notice tarp covering the casino’s framework. The interior design will not be unveiled until the casino opens next year.
Carmine Capuano of Springfield said, “I think that people who normally wouldn’t come to Springfield, now have a destination point to come to. I think it’s a home run.”
MGM Springfield is on track to open in September of 2018, just a few months after the I-91 construction wraps up in May of next year.
