Some fruits & vegetables can be toxic

Even potatoes can pose a risk

(CNN) Fruits and veggies are bad for your health? According to researchers, some are.

The CDC in India said a sweet fruit like lychee, If eaten unripe, can be toxic. If eaten too early, particularly by someone who missed a meal or by a malnourished child, they may even turn fatal.

The same toxin found in lychee can also be found in ackee. Ackee is a popular plant grown in Jamaica, and like lychee, if eaten unripe can have negative effects.

Be careful with cassava, also known as yucca. According to the World Bank, cassava is the third most important source of calories in Africa, South America and parts of Asia. It’s a root vegetable that can be fried, boiled or baked, but can be poisonous if not processed correctly.

According to the FDA, toxins are higher in raw red kidney beans than other types of beans. Within hours people can develop nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Even potatoes can pose a risk, especially when they’re green in color or have sprouted. Vomiting, stomach pain, hallucinations and even paralysis are some of the side effects.
