SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield area labor unions observed “Workers’ Memorial Day” on Friday, remembering fellow workers who died on the job over the years. Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno signed a “Workers’ Memorial Day” proclamation.
Labor Leader Fiore Grassetti told a group of people at the John Boyle O’Reilly Club how painful it is when he notifies a worker’s loved ones of an on-the-job tragedy. “I just had a member that fell 35 feet a couple of weeks ago. He survived. And about a week and a half later, a member had a heart attack on the job and he died.”
Grassetti reminded his fellow labor leaders that workers are now safer on the job. He spoke about labor contracts that include more provisions protecting workers from on the job accidents.
