Local boxing legend helps teach Springfield students life lessons

The students attend Springfield's Forest Park Middle School

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Western Massachusetts boxing legend Pat Ireland will spearhead a Springfield Anti-Bullying Program.

With a $20,000 gift from Health New England, the former Holyoke Golden Gloves Champion and professional boxer will help teach 40 boys and girls life lessons. The students attend Springfield’s Forest Park Middle School.

Ireland said, “obviously we have a bullying issue, a bullying issue not just here, it’s all over the country and it’ll make a big impact on that.”

Jdarlia Marde, a 6th Grade Forest Park Middle School student, said, “I’m going to be doing exercise in learning physical, if not mental too.”

The 40 middle school students chosen have each learned English as a second language. Their mentoring program will last five weeks.
