SOUTH DEERFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A closed church in South Deerfield is now under town ownership, after Deerfield voters accepted it as a gift during town meeting Monday night.
The town intends to renovate the South Deerfield Congregational Church and turn it into the next senior center.
The more than 150 year-old church on North Main Street is located right next to the current South County Senior Center. The congregation closed and they decided to donate the church to the town. Deerfield residents unanimously accepted the gift at Monday night’s town meeting.
“It was a very generous gift the congregation voted to offer the building to the town and the plan is to move our regional senior center. It would make a nice little center of activity,” Town Administrator Wendy Foxmyn said.
Foxmyn told 22News along with making the church the senior center, there’s also discussion to turn the current senior center building, into affordable senior housing.
Foxmyn said worshippers will now attend other area churches of the same denomination.
