5 forced out, cat killed in Springfield multi-family house fire

Firefighter suffered cut while working to put out Melville Street fire

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A firefighter had to be taken to the hospital for an injury suffered while working to put out a fire at a multi-family house in the city’s Liberty Heights neighborhood.

Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News that five people have been forced out of the home at 88-90 Melville Street. He says that the fire started in a first-floor bedroom at around 10:40 A.M.

A cat was killed in the fire. Leger said that a firefighter was taken to the hospital for treatment of a cut.

The Red Cross is helping the two first floor residents and the three second floor residents.

The Springfield Arson Squad is now looking into what caused the fire.
