MassDOT crews to start repairing bridge in Hadley

The bridge crosses over the Fort River in Hadley

HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is moving forward with repairs on the bridge on Bay Road in Hadley, starting on May 8th.

The bridge crosses over the Fort River in Hadley, and it has been reduced to one lane, with a traffic light on both sides. No cars over three tons can cross the bridge.

MassDOT planned to begin repairs on April 1st, but it was delayed due to not having the proper permit.

UMass Amherst senior Willis Ashley told 22News, “Its a much easier way to get to Northampton from places like Hampshire College and Mount Holyoke College, and it’s much more direct. So I’m really looking forward to getting that bridge under construction and getting it done.”

The bridge was originally scheduled to be finished this spring, until inspectors found the damage to be too extensive. Hadley Department of Public Works Director Marlo Warner told 22News that it will take about three months to finish making these repairs.
