(CNN) – Someday, passwords will likely be a distant memory. Now, they are necessary and potentially harmful. Especially if someone hacks your password and gets access to your entire online life.
Facebook says it wants to protect you by making passwords useless. The site launched delegated account recovery.
It’s still in the beta version, but the idea is if you forget your password to an app or site, the program uses Facebook to verify who you are.
Instead of answering the same question, like your mom’s maiden name, Facebook will make you prove yourself through exercises like recognizing friend’s photos.
Facebook says this method is more secure than texts or emails asking for your info. For now, developers must apply to use the program, but Facebook is open sourcing the technology, so eventually you’ll see more companies use it.
