4/20 comes as support for marijuana grows

60% support legalization, Gallup poll says

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Thursday is 4/20 – an unofficial holiday for marijuana enthusiasts. It is a day of both celebration and reflection for people who support the legalization of the drug for recreational use.

For years, 4/20 has been a day for users to find time in their day to smoke. Pot shops in states where weed is legal also offer customer discounts. A new Gallup poll shows that marijuana remains a controversial topic. About 60% of adults support its legalization.

Kalifa Felassie of Northampton said that there should be more education on the topic. “I just really hope that the community and the United States, and the world, can learn about cannabis, and it can be about education instead of fears and laws,” Felassie said.

This year’s 4/20 follows successful legalization campaigns in California, Nevada, and Massachusetts. These four states join Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington as states that allow recreational marijuana.

A recent Yahoo/Marist survey revealed that 35 million American adults smoke weed regularly.
