NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A workshop for people considering a service dog was held at the Animal Alliances Dog Training and Educational Center in Northampton, Thursday night,
Anyone living with a mental or physical impairment that affects their everyday life activities qualifies for a service dog.
On Thursday, people learned about the resources and programs available for those interested in service dog training. There is a long list of qualities dogs need to have in order to become service dogs.
Sharon Waschler of Wendell said, “A service dog needs to be really friendly and comfortable in a lot of environments that most dogs wouldn’t be comfortable in. It needs to be very calm and easy to relax. It needs to be interested in training and working.”
There are programs for people who want to train their own dogs to be service dogs.
