AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – The Agawam Police Headquarters was evacuated Tuesday night and Springfield Street was closed off for about two hours because of a suspicious package.

Agawam Police Chief Eric Gillis told 22News that a suspect whom the department had dealt with previously, dropped a package off in the lobby some time after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, and ran away prompting the evacuation and road closure.

Chief Gillis said he called in the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad, Agawam Firefighters and members of the Anti-Terrorism Task Force. The package was x-rayed and determined to be a hoax. Springfield Street re-opened at 7:12 p.m. Tuesday.

The suspect was eventually caught by Agawam Police on Tuesday while he was leaving his home, Chief Gillis said. The suspect was brought back to the station once the area was cleared.

During the evacuation, Agawam Police had 911 emergency calls diverted to the West Springfield Police Department, and the business line of the police department was unmanned and calls were not be answered for a time.

The investigation is still ongoing. The suspects name is not being released at this time.
