WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – West Springfield Police are investigating the death of a woman after a shooting Monday afternoon on Highland Avenue.

West Springfield Police Officer Mark Lussier told 22News there was one female victim in the shooting, but no other information about her was released. Mayor William Reichelt later confirmed Monday night that the woman had died, and the case is being investigated as a homicide.

There was a large amount of police activity outside the Hillcrest Apartment buildings on Highland Avenue, which is located off Riverdale Street, near the Holyoke city line. District Attorney Anthony Gulluni was there and spoke with detectives, but has not yet released any information.

A portion of the building’s parking lot was taped-off while police investigated. We spoke with a resident at the apartment building who said it’s not unusual to see the police around, and weren’t surprised to come home to several police cruisers outside.

22News will continue to cover this story and bring you the latest information, on-air and on WWLP.com, when it becomes available.
