Rick’s Place helping families in times of grief

Organization named after Wilbraham native who died on 9/11

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – State legislators met with community members at Western New England University Monday to learn about the organization Rick’s Place.

The organization was created in honor of Rick Thorpe, a Wilbraham native who died in the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Rick’s Place offers help with the grieving process for young people and their families. They say that here in western Massachusetts, there is a big need for these services.

”Tragedy strikes anytime, anywhere, and children are left without a parent of two, and so the grieving process is very unique to children. So we’ve created a safe environment for kids to be with like-minded kids that are in the same situation, which eliminates having to explain why you’re there in the first place and that kind of uncomfortableness when you’re grieving,” Rick’s Place President Bill Scatolini said.

Rick’s Place is currently serving 82 individuals in western Massachusetts.
