FLORENCE, Mass. (WWLP) – Firefighters in Northampton were called to a park early Monday morning, where they found a children’s play structure on fire.

Northampton police said the fire happened at Arcanum Field off North Maple Street in Florence, just before 3:00 a.m.

22News went to that playground, where we found all of the plastic had melted, and the metal frameworks were burned.

Northampton police Captain John Cartledge told 22News that given the history of arson fires across the city, they are taking this incident seriously. Posters are taped on the park’s benches, advertising a $5,000 reward to identify who did it.

“To pull up and see that it’s gone, it’s heartbreaking. A little boy that just pulled up came up here in a stroller and he started crying as soon as he walked over, and it was just so sad,” Ruth Elgers of Northampton said.

Police detectives are working with the city’s fire investigation unit as they look into the cause of the fire.

Anyone who believes they saw something suspicious or has information about the fire is asked to call Northampton police detectives at (413) 587-1100.
