(CNN) – Police said a Florida woman was arrested after she gave birth while high on crack cocaine, and what she did after is hard to believe any mother could do.
Even with a couple of days to process, Carrie Meeks still can’t believe what happened in her own backyard. She said, “I couldn’t even imagine if it had died. I couldn’t imagine doing that with my baby. Even if it was dead, you can’t just, like how do you do that?”
Meeks said she invited 24-year-old Katrina Kegelman to her home near Cleveland and Highland before noticing Kegelman was about to give birth. “I was like, you are in labor, you need to go to the hospital. Well, we didn’t make it that far.”
She said she was inside when it all happened but quickly noticed Kegelman’s pants. “You could see they were heavy, hanging way down. You could see the pants stretched out.”
She immediately went to call 911, but according to this affidavit, Kegelman told her not to. Kegelman later admitted to police, “She was afraid of being charged with the baby’s death for having smoked crack just moments before giving birth.”
So while Meeks called for an ambulance, Kegelman hid the baby under a plant. Meeks said, “There’s not a drug in this world that could have made me stash my baby in the bushes and then lie to people and tell them that it’s not there.”
Kegelman finally showed paramedics where she hid her newborn baby boy. Police said he’s now in the hospital, while his mother now faces a child neglect charge.
When Meeks found out the baby was okay, she felt relieved, “I’m glad he’s okay. I really am. And I guess I’m glad things went the way they did because I hope that lady never gets that child.”
According to court records, Kegelman bonded out of jail Thursday morning. Police said it’s up to the Florida Department of Children and Families Services to find a home for the baby.
