100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled in Westfield

Two-mile stretch of Montgomery Road has been shut down

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A two-mile stretch of Montgomery Road in Westfield was shut down for part of the afternoon Friday, due to a fuel spill.

Westfield Fire Capt. Rebecca Boutin told 22News that the fuel tank aboard a truck was accidentally punctured, causing about 100 gallons of diesel fuel to spill throughout the road.

The fire department, as well as members of the Department of Public Works and workers from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs worked to clean up the spill.

Boutin noted that things could have been worse, telling 22News, “We were lucky in the sense that we didn’t have any sewer drains in the area, so it’s not going into any waterways.”
