South Hadley mourning sudden death of school principal

Counselors from all the town’s schools will be available to students and staff

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – The South Hadley public school community is mourning the sudden death of a school administrator. Michael E. Smith Middle School Principal Paul Plummer passed away Tuesday night.

South Hadley School Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Young told 22News he was informed of the death by Plummer’s wife early Wednesday morning. Dr. Young informed students and staff of the tragic news in a meeting Wednesday afternoon, and a robocall informed parents at home.

Counselors from all the town’s schools will be available to students and staff for the remainder of the week. Dr. Young told 22News Vice Principal Vincent Napoli will serve as the school’s acting Principal and Dean Beth Craven will be the school’s interim Vice Principal.

Dr. Young said the South Hadley school community is in shock. They will be determining over the next several days how to remember Principal Plummer through possible vigils or dedications.

It’s not clear what caused Principal Plummer’s death. No word on if funeral arrangements will be public or private.
