MassDOT officials say I-91 project ahead of schedule

MassDOT does not expect to exceed $150 million

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Interstate 91 viaduct project is ahead of schedule and might be completed sooner than expected.

During a meeting Wednesday night in Springfield, officials from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said the improvements to the elevated section of I-91 through Springfield could be done by next spring, well before the projected completion of fall of 2018.

District Highway Director Patrick Paul told 22News they’re pushing for the entire project to be done by the end of this year; “Well, they’re looking at some of the techniques and we’re reviewing it with the contractor to try to do a few things differently, keeping traffic flow in mind. Perform like joint work a little quicker, we’re looking at trying to do that.”

MassDOT said spending is still on track, and they don’t expect to exceed the $150-million price tag.
