Driver went off road, crashed into stone wall before van rolled over

SUNDERLAND, Mass. (WWLP) – Sunderland police are trying to figure out what caused a van to go off the road, crash into a stone wall, and turn over late Thursday morning.

Sunderland Police Chief Erik Demetropoulos told 22News that before 10:30 A.M., the driver was headed down Old Amherst Road near the Route 47 intersection, when he crossed over the center line and then off the road. He then collided with a stone wall and went over the lawn of the apartment complex at 39 Old Amherst Road. The van ultimately ended up on its roof in the driveway of the complex.

Demetropoulos said that the driver was the only person inside the van at the time of the crash. The chief said the man had no obvious injuries, but was taken by ambulance to Baystate Franklin Medical Center nevertheless.

A one-mile stretch of Old Amherst Road had been shut down until about 2:00 as police investigated.
